You’re trying to fit an eye exam into your busy schedule, but you’re not sure how much time to block off. A comprehensive eye exam typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes, but certain factors can extend your visit. This time allows us to be thorough and give your eyes the attention they deserve.
At River City Eye, we make it our priority to respect your time and provide attentive care.
How Long Does an Eye Exam Take?
The Short Answer
For a standard comprehensive exam, plan on being at the office for about 30–60 minutes. If your visit involves additional tests for a specific vision concern, you might need up to 2 hours for consultation and testing.
Factors That Affect Your Exam Length
Your appointment time can change based on a few different factors. If it’s your first visit, our team will spend a little more time getting to know you and your history. The length of your visit can also be affected by whether you need tests like a dilated eye exam or a first-time contact lens fitting.
What to Expect During Your Visit
Your Pre-Exam Chat & Tests
Your visit starts with a friendly chat to review your health and vision history. You’ll go through a few preliminary tests that check your eye pressure and other aspects of your vision. This is a great time to share any concerns you have about your eyes or what you need from your glasses or contacts.
The Main Event
When you sit down with your eye doctor, they’ll determine your prescription and check how well your eye muscles work together.
Pupil Dilation & Contact Lens Fittings
The Deal with Dilation
If your doctor recommends pupil dilation, this adds about 30 minutes. Most of this time involves waiting for the eye drops to take effect. Dilation allows for a much better view of the inside of your eye. Your pupils can stay dilated for a few hours afterward, making your vision blurry and sensitive to light, so it’s a good idea to arrange for a ride home.
Add Time for a Contact Lens Fit
A contact lens fitting requires additional measurements of your eye’s surface. If you’re new to contacts, your eye care team will also provide training on how to insert, remove, and properly care for contact lenses. You may also need a follow-up appointment to check the fit and feel of your lenses.

Your Exam Is More Than a Vision Check
A Window to Your Overall Health
Your eyes can show early signs of a variety of health conditions. During your eye exam, your eye doctor will look for any changes that could be related to conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure. It’s a simple way to keep an eye on your whole-body health.
Why Regular Exams Matter
Your vision can change subtly over time, sometimes without you even noticing. Regular exams help keep your prescription current, so that you can see your best. These appointments are a key part of maintaining your long-term eye health and catching potential issues before they become problems.
Tips for a Smooth & Easy Appointment
How to Prepare for Your Visit
To make your visit as smooth as possible, take a moment to think about your eyes beforehand. It can be helpful to make a list of any symptoms you’ve noticed or questions you may have. Also, consider your family’s eye health history, as some conditions can be hereditary.
What to Bring With You
When you come in for your appointment, make sure to bring your current glasses and contact lenses, along with a list of any medications you take. If you’re expecting pupil dilation, bringing a pair of sunglasses for the ride home can help make the trip much more comfortable.
